Citric acid is a medium strong acid, which is found naturally in citrus fruits. Citric acid may be extracted from fruits, but for industrial purposes, citric acid is mainly produced artificially. Citric acid is added to regulate the acidity (pH-value). Citric acid simultaneously has a preservative effect on the types of bacteria, which cannot grow in low pH environments.
The substance can irritate the eyes.
Substances that can irritate the eye are allowed in products certified by Asthma-Allergy Denmark but we require that the total concentration of irritants are low and we always make an individual assessment of the product taking into account the use and the amount that the consumer will be exposed to.
Information for producers:
We have requirements for the total amount of irritants in a certified product. The final assessment will always depend on an individual assessment of the product but the following could be used as a guidance:
o A total amount of irritants below 10 % is normally acceptable
o A total amount of irritants between 10 % and 20 % could in some cases be allowed. This would depend on an individual assessment taking into account the product type, other ingredients and the use of the product
o A total amount of irritants above 20 % would only be allowed in few cases where other ingredients are added to the product to prevent irritation. This would be an individual assessment taking into account the product type, ingredients added to prevent irritation, other ingredients and the use of the product
