Triethanolamine (TEA) is used in cosmetic products as an emulsifier, active substance and for adjusting the pH-value in a product.
The substance can irritate the eyes. Substances that can irritate the eye are allowed in products certified by Asthma-Allergy Denmark but, we require that the total concentration of irritants is low and we conduct an individual assessment of the product taking into account the use and the amount of the substance that the consumer will be exposed to.
The substance is allowed in products certified by Asthma-Allergy Denmark in restricted concentrations depending on the other ingredients, product type and use.
We have requirements for the total amount of irritants in a certified product. The final assessment will always depend on an individual assessment of the product but the following could be used as a guidance:
