The substance may be used for several things in cosmetic products, for instance as an emulsifier i.e. a substance added due to the ability to mix oily and watery liquids. The substance is equally used as a stabilizer, dissolvent, moisture retainer and/or as a texturizing agent.
The substance is allowed in products, which have been certified by Asthma-Allergy Denmark.
It has to be noticed that steroid cream often contain the substance and that allergy has been seen in persons with chronicle skin disease who frequently often uses steroid cream. This is because the skin barrier is destroyed and the skin is therefore particularly vulnerable. It may therefore be prudent to choose products without cetearyl alcohol and cetyl and stearyl alcohol.
The substance can irritate the skin and eyes. Irritation to skin and eyes is not an allergy or permanent condition. Substances that can irritate the eye and skin are allowed in products certified by Asthma-Allergy Denmark. We do, however, require that the total concentration of irritants are low and we always do an individual assessment of the product taking into account the use and the amount of the substance that the consumer will be exposed to.
Information for the manufacturers
We have requirements for the total amount of irritants in a certified product. The final assessment will always depend on an individual assessment of the product but the following could be used as a guidance:
